Wandering through the ocean of shows , it is more and more difficult to find something interesting and not very secondary. This time I managed to find a short Danish series with many years of secret in the background. Equinox is a low fantasy, horror, thriller and crime fiction, but in accessible and meaningful proportions. In addition, it is definitely more pleasant and interesting than Dark – often both titles are compared with each other. Another advantage of the series is that it requires some concentration and the use of your brain to assemble the elements of the equinox mystery on your own.
Due to the origin and language used in the series, it is a good springboard from typical American or English-language series. Interestingly, the series is based on the Danish Equinox 1985 podcast, which was very popular in Denmark at the time. I have the impression that the Scandinavian language and the presented landscape definitely strengthen the atmosphere of the tv show.
The events presented in the series are based on a secret from many years ago, while the main axis of events takes place as far as the current reality. In 1999, little Astrid (her fate we follow later) experienced a trauma because her sister Ida and the entire school class disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Twenty-one people mysteriously disappeared, and after all only three was found, whom of course do not remember anything (plus the bus driver, who lost his sanity). Astrid suffers most of his life from nightmares and terrifying visions after this tragic event. Twenty-one years later, when one of her sister’s class survivors suddenly calls Astrid and alludes to the tragedy, she decides to investigate what happened in 1999 on her own. Yes, little Astrid has become a journalist (you can hear the rustling of tentacles).
From that moment on, the story gains momentum (although sometimes I have to admit that it also slows down a bit), and the mix of events from many years ago with the current ones works great. It is worth distinguish that this is an interesting way of presenting how the disappearance of Ida affected the live of Astrid and those associated with her. The above two steps bring together scattered threads and motifs into a meaningful whole. Perhaps only the enormous influence of past events can explain why the heroine drops practically everything and moves on to finally clear up an unfinished case.
It’s hard to write more about it to not serve a cruel spoiler, which will be very significant in the mini-series. As you can easily guess from the title, the case will revolve around pagan beliefs, rituals, and forgotten secrets about the rites of the Equinox. All in a happy and childish, sometimes gloomy and adult colors, with an appropriately disturbing soundtrack.
Abandoned investigation, madness of witnesses, accidental discoveries, lies, hidden plans, incomplete documents, deliberate thefts, researches, cycles, symbols, crazy visions and dreams, mysterious notes and even music – all these appear in the series and lead step by step main character to the target (Investigators take out notes, and tap revolvers in their pockets).
Importantly, the story presented in the series is so interesting that it encourages you to verify it yourself. Thanks to this, you can better understand what exactly the show itself is about.
I recommend it, due to the slowly building an atmosphere of madness and mystery. If someone likes the atmosphere of H. P. Lovecraft and the RPG Call of Cthulhu, the more should reach for this title. The theme of the investigation related to old beliefs and solving a mysterious case on the basis of various information will certainly be helpful during many RPG sessions.
